No One
Who is No One? Probably No One is the first character I had that I played long enough outside the dungeon to care about. NoOne was an elf and I believe he was a fighter. Only first level, but he had an interesting career.
Most of it was bluff. Somehow he got involved with a magic factory as a special courier. The company was Maxwell and Maxwell's and they specialized in making special silver hammers. They acted like D&D "Dancing Swords". Once you had struck your enemy three times, the hammer would continue to fight for a number of rounds without your help. I'm not sure if they actually gave NoOne one of their hammers, they were pretty valuable. But what he did get was something else. In order to do his job as courier he was given the use of a Wyvern trained as a mount. It was fitted with saddle and saddlebags in the traditional colours of Maxwell and Maxwell's, bright fluorescent pink!
For those who don't know, Wyverns are like small dragons that have only two legs instead of the dragon's normal four. They didn't have a fiery breath, but they could fly fairly fast and were fairly manoeuvrable. In those good old days of D&D, probably 1975, Elves were considered to never need sleep, to be able to see in the dark, to never miss with a bow, and to always have elven cloak and boots to nearly make them invisible in a wilderness environment.
NoOne was given his first assignment, to deliver a package... well I can't recall what or to where, but NoOne took off with his Wyvern and whatever else the company gave him.
Now the fact that NoOne got all this stuff was pure serendipity. All lucky rolls of the dice, nothing to do with fantastic characteristics or excellent role-playing. Though the role-playing was fun and pretty good.
What I remember next was being pursued by five flaming figures. NoOne fired arrow after arrow at them. Hitting them as elves were wont to do, but to little effect. NoOne was forced down. I can't recall really what happened after that. But I don't believe it was the end of NoOne or the Wyvern. I do recall finding out they were a precision flying team of Balrogs. Probably a bit tamed down from what Gandalf ran into in Fellowship of the Ring, but enough to take down my character.
Anyhow I know that he continued on to other adventures, chumming around with some pretty powerful characters. The important thing was that it was fun and my first experience of a character that lasted more than an evening.
