New Members experiencing the SCA have the opportunity to learn alot from more experienced members. Demos, talking to members at events, practices and meetings, joining in at a Newcomer's Evening or taking courses at one of the Newcomers' Events or University of Ithra Sessions can all help a new person find their way through their first year. I'm proposing something  to add to these resources!

I propose that more experienced members volunteer to make a short duration commitment to foster between 3 and 6 new members for a period of 6 to 12 months. I outline my proposed Idea in the writeup linked to below.

The Fostering system would not replace anything that is already happening. It would add to what already exists.

Fostering Project Writeup Files:
The text content is the same for each of the format choices given below. Click on the link to the right of the description of the file type:

Word version (DOC): The link to the MSWord Doc file is the prettiest. It was done with MSWord from MS Office 2000. It includes the fonts I used and the background which makes it look quite nice. The background and graphics used should work out okay in Word 97 and probably Word 6.0 as well. Use the Web Page Display rather than the one showing the page. That way you'll see the background. It should default to that when you load the page.

Adobe Acrobat version (PDF): The link to the Adobe PDF file is not quite as pretty. It has the fonts I used, but for some reason the Adobe PDF files do not include the background image. It would print up nicely on paper though, as would the Doc file. The PDF should also work well regardless of the platform as long as you have an Adobe Acrobat reader. ***Note I am having problems with PDF files on this Server so the PDF version is not available.

Web version (HTML): The link to the HTML file will take you to the web page version. It will look good only if you have the fonts I used installed on your system. Otherwise it will look a bit on the plain size though the graphics and the background should come through fine. I'm not quite up to speed on including fonts with web sites or creating chart things so that alternate fonts can be selected for your browser to select from.

The fonts I used were:

  1. Celticmd: used for drop caps. Just a touch fancier than the Carolingia. If you have to replace it use a moderately simple decorative capital.
  2. Elder Futhark: used for runic signature. If you see "wad" written above my name, it should be my signature written in anglo saxon runes. I drop the silent "e". If you have to replace it select almost any runic alphabet, or perhaps something with a Norse feel.
  3. Carolingia: used for the main text. It is a very nice caligraphic looking text. It is a touch harder to read than something like Times New Roman or one of the Celtic cursive ones. But I rather like the look of the Carolingia and have grown a bit tired of Black Chancery. If you have to replace it, I'd suggest something cursive in the celtic family or anything caligraphic. Make sure it has numbers and punctuation. Otherwise I find that Footlight MT Light. It's very clear, but has a slight archaic touch to it. It was included in Windows 3.0 and I think later versions, but not standardly installed.
